Rodelsa Hall Season Schedule (June 2011 – February 2012)

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

There is no other place here in Cagayan de Oro City where you can find world class cultural and artistic performances than Liceo de Cagayan University’s Rodelsa Hall. Just last June 30, Rodelsa Hall was graced by Mr. Diomedes Saraza, Jr, a lauded violinist who graduated from the Juilliard School in New Yor—as a scholar, no less.

If you missed that special world class performance by a very talented Filipino artist, Rodelsa Hall’s Office of Cultural Affairs has more shows lined up for the rest of the year, up to February of 2012.

August

The next performance on Rodelsa’s stage will feature a musically inclined and talented family of four. On August 9 at 7:30 in the evening, Rodelsa Hall is proud to present the Kabayao Family Quartet, a family act headed by Mr. Gilopez Kabayao, an acclaimed violinist; his wife Corazon, pianist; and his daughters Farida and Sicilienne, both following the footsteps of their father as violinists.

The Kabayao family will also give a lecture to students on August 11. This is in line with their goal of acquainting today’s youth with classical music.

September

There are two events to watch out for in the month of September.

On September 2, 7:30 in the evening, you can sit and listen to the beautiful, sensitive music of Ms. Carmencita Sipin-Aspiras. She was trained in playing the piano in Vienna and is already making a name for herself in the United States.

A much awaited annual event will take place from September 30 to October 2. Students, local guests and foreign delegates will once again get together for the 14th Cine Europa Film Festival. This will be the fourth consecutive year for Liceo University and Rodelsa Hall to play host to the film festival. Tickets will be out sometime in the 2nd week of August.

November

Following the Cine Europa is another festival recognizing the different works and accomplishments of filmmakers. On November 18 and 19 will be the Cinefiesta Film Festival: A Celebration of Regional Films.

January

Last year, these two brilliant musical artists performed with acclaimed cellist Victor Coo. In January 2012, Kagaya-anons will witness another night of superior display of musicality and wonderful music from the duo of violinist Joseph Esmilla and grand pianist Rudolf Pelaez Golez.

February

Another set of two performances will heat things up in Rodelsa Hall in February. First up is the highly anticipated performance of the Philippine Ballet Theater on February 24 to 26. Those interested in watching this stage performance will have to constantly check in with the Office of Cultural Affairs early next year though, since this schedule may be changed without prior notice.

Then on February 29 at 7:30 in the evening, the stage will be graced by highly acclaimed classical pianist, Yin Chu Jou. She comes from Taiwan but stayed for a time in Cebu City and graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Music.

Performances to Watch Out For

It’s still early in the year to get news about the next Liceo University Annual Play, which will likely be held in February 2012 (back in February of this year, Rodelsa Hall presented the play Romeo & Juliet). This is a noted Rodelsa Hall event that is awaited not only by the students of Liceo, but also by the rest of the theater-loving Kagay-anons. As the year approaches its last quarter, we may finally have some news about next year’s annual play.

The 2nd Michael A. Costello Fun Run

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Dr. Michael Anthony Costello was the founder and Academic Coordinator of St. Mary’s School before the ill-fated Cebu Pacific Flight 387 ended his life in 1998. Twelve years later, the first Michael A. Costello Fun Run was held on his birthday, June 27, 2010.

The Michael A. Costello Fun Run was organized by the St. Mary’s School administration in memory of their founder, who was an avid runner. Many of St. Mary’s students remember seeing him jogging around the Macasandig area. Organizers describe the fun run as a celebration of their founder’s life and legacy. Simultaneous with the CDO race, SMS alumni, friends and family in Manila and across the globe also hold their own fun runs or races.

This year, since Dr. Costello’s birthday fell on a Monday, the race was held on Sunday, June 26. The race also served as the kick-off of the school’s 25th foundation anniversary.

One of those who joined this year’s race was Grace Garcia, an SMS alumna. While she went there with her Batch ’95 friends because they wanted to “get together and catch up”, they also realized how lucky they were that they got to know “Sir Mike” well compared to the younger batches. She adds that their batch was lucky to have been trained by Dr. Costello in various essay contests and extemporaneous speeches. Grace described Dr. Costello as a “firm but kind” teacher.

Grace believes that participating in the race is a good way of contributing to the MAC Scholarship Foundation, which is the main beneficiary of the fun run. The foundation is dedicated in its mission to give financially disadvantaged but academically deserving students opportunities to avail of quality education.

The MAC Fun Run is also a good venue for the younger batches of SMS students to get to know the man who gave them the chance to experience education at its best at St. Mary’s School.

Ongoing Construction of The XU-Pryce Center for Entrepreneurship

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Things sure look good for Xavier University these days, as construction is ongoing for its most recent building/complex, which is set to be finished this year. Dubbed as the Xavier University–Pryce Center for Entrepreneurship, this new construction is a combined effort between Pryce Corporation and Xavier University. The building is set to be a student mall located right within the school, which will support budding student entrepreneurs.

Teaching From Experience

They say experience is the best teacher–and this is what the Center for Entrepreneurship is set to offer the students of the university. Operating like a business incubator, the center will house student businesses under the university’s Student Entrepreneurship Program, or SEP.

The Student Entrepreneurship Program is a student program designed to nurture enterprises that are led, owned and operated by students themselves. Given the goals of the program, the center could not be any more of a great venue. Student businesses will basically start or “incubate” here, before they are pushed out into the real world.

SEP – Open For All Students

The entrepreneurship program or SEP is open for all university students – not just those under the School of Business Management. They will apply and present business ideas and proposals, and those that will be chosen will be given starting capital to help them start their business.

Aside from this, student entrepreneurs will also be given assistance in marketing, developing business linkages, product development and will likewise be offered free consultation and advice from experts. Student/business owners will likewise be trained with several important aspects related to entrepreneurship, focusing on business ethics, social responsibility, entrepreneurial values and of course, stewardship of the environment.

The center is designed to have at least 13 shopping stalls to house the chosen SEP businesses. Here, the students can display their products and market them as their own. Aside from the shopping stalls, the center will also have a training room and a real business center complete with computers, telephone and of course, Internet connection.

The new building is set to rise between the Science Center and the Agriculture Building, which is on the left side of the campus. The center’s rear entrance sits inside the university campus, but its front entrance will be accessible outside the school campus, making the center and the businesses inside of it accessible to the general public.

The construction of the project commenced last March 29, 2011 and is set to be completed by September of this year. While September is still a couple of months away, there’s also something else to get excited about. The new Magis Student Complex, which is built on the area that used to house the old XU Canteen, is set to be completed anytime this month. The complex will house different school organizations, as well as the much awaited bookstore and canteen.
