Current Issues in Cagayan de Oro City

Monday, June 4th, 2012

Cagayan de Oro City is a fast growing metropolis in Mindanao in terms of business, infrastructures, and other aspects benefiting a major city. Many investors would come here to invest their money and set up their business here in Mindanao. These investors are coming in from other countries because they believe that Cagayan de Oro City is a good place to for business with a good peace and order record for corporate expansion.

But,one of the current issues in Cagayan de Oro Citynow is unemployment. This issue has always been an Achilles heel not only for Cagayanons but, also from people from the provinces coming to the city to search for work. Recently though, some of the unemployed Cagayanons were victims of the “Sendong” calamity. Lack of education is another bigfactor for unemployment. Though many companies are in need of employees but, many applicants are simply not qualified to satisfy the company standards and needs. For someCagayanons though, it’s a simple lack of confidence in applying for jobs, especially in terms of English communication skills and lack competitiveness.

One solution to the education and confidence problem is for colleges in the city and surrounding provinces to introduce graduation modules, workshops, and seminars that focus on job searching, job placements, how to write proper application letters and resumes, boosting confidence levels during job searches, and how to face interviews and answer interview questions objectively. In this way, fresh graduates will not be groping in the dark when applying for jobs.

Another solution is for schools to boost and push to improve the learning skills in the English. Now more than ever, English is now the accepted language of global business. Unfortunately, in spite of the increase in the demand for Philippine outsourcing services, the Philippines is slowly sinking in its English language skills output and this is clearly seen in its many graduates who lack even basic speaking and writing skills.

If at least in Cagayan de Oro these solutions can be implemented then Cagayanon graduates can become language articulate, confident and skillful and thus, not suffer so much from unemployment.

Starbucks Now Hiring Baristas

Monday, October 4th, 2010

In line with the upcoming grand opening of the first ever Starbucks coffee shop here in the city and in the entire island of Mindanao, the sole proprietor of Starbucks Philippines, Rustan Coffee Company, is now starting to scout for qualified applicants that will soon make up their CDO based staff.

According to Starbucks franchise owner and Rustan Coffee Corporation’s recruitment specialist, Ma-Ann Rabino, the company is proud to bring the internationally known coffee chain to the city of Cagayan de Oro. Driven to bring maximum satisfaction to its customers through its high quality coffee and excellent services, the Starbucks management team is currently on the lookout for qualified applicants to fill in several positions for the new Starbucks branch.

Ms. Rabino further disclosed that the Cagayan de Oro Staff will be composed entirely of local employees or Cagayan de Oro based applicants, from the manager down to the coffee shop’s service crew. Even the shop’s pastries will be prepared by a number of the city’s best breadmakers.

The company has been looking to fill all vacancies since the summer of 2010. In fact, Rustan Coffee Corporation started posting job ads as early as April 2010. A month after the company announced a vacancy for the position of Store Manager in CDO, it began to pose announcements for baristas.

Despite being considered as the largest coffeehouse company, not only in the Philippines but also in the world (with a global total of 16,635 stores), the Starbucks Company as a whole still continues to give importance to one of the most important factors in their business: their esteemed baristas.

By its very definition, the word “barista” simply refers to the person (often an employee of a coffeehouse) who is in charge of preparing and serving espressos and other coffee based drinks to people. The company gives high importance to their baristas as are considered as the face of their business. The minimum requirement needed to qualify for the position is a bachelor’s degree. And just like most hiring processes go, having a valid experience would, of course, give the applicant an edge. So, if you are one of those people who are looking forward to becoming a Starbucks barista (or any other position), click this link and you may still have time to become a part of the world’s most popular coffee shop.
