Liza Maza

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Filipina activist and development worker Liza Maza was born on the 8th of September 1957. As an activist, Liza Maza currently serves as the representative for the Gabriela Women’s Party in the 14th Congress of the Philippines.

The leftist organization Gabriela was founded way back in April 1984. The organization greatly advocates several important issues regarding Filipinas and women in general. It operates as a nationwide network of institutions and programs that addresses issues like poverty, globalization, human rights, militarism, sex trafficking, and censorship among others. The organization’s name itself is an acronym for the “General Assembly Binding Women for Reforms, Integrity, Equality, Leadership and Action.”

Going back to Liza Maza, this notable female activist is currently serving her second term in the public service position. Previously, she served in the 12th Congress as the only woman representative of the Bayan Muna Partylist.

As a legislator, Liza Maza has contributed her efforts as an author and sponsor for the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003. Aside from that, she was also a co-author of the Anti-Violence in Women and Children Act, or the Anti-VAWC, as well as the Juvenile Justice Act.

To show her support for all the Filipina workers, Liza Maza started to investigate deeper into the practice of contractualization and its effect on women workers. In line with this movement, Liza Maza also served as the principal author of a pending bill in congress. The bill aims to ensure the rights of the female workers to gain security over tenure by stopping contractualization.

Apart from women, Liza Maza also advocates the basic rights of children to education, as well as the welfare of the teachers. In line with this advocacy, she initiated the 202-20 formula that urges Filipino legislators to spare 20% of their priority development assistance fund in order to support the construction of more classrooms.

Migrante Partylist

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The Migrante partylist, which is a sectoral party that promotes the welfare of overseas Filipinos, envisions forming a society where homes are not suffering from the pressing need for survival – a culture that caters to all to attain equality and a decent and humane way of living.

It aims to get overseas Filipinos to take part in the active movement to successfully and continuously support and promote the rights of the sector that the party stands for.

Migrante, which stays true to its mission and vision, in its Founding Convention prepared a responsive and hands-on program of action that would strengthen the status of Filipinos abroad while also making sure that their families are doing well.

The partylist finds ways to help their projects materialize through the use of various forms of pro-active programs such as responsive legislative movements and lobbying of sound, which is why it is taking part in the partylist elections this coming May 2010.

The main driving forces of Migrante are:

-To strengthen the communication and unity of the organizations that support overseas Filipinos and their loved ones in the country, as well as abroad.
-To advocate and protect the welfare and rights of Filipinos overseas by getting involved in the lobbying and passage of apposite and responsive governmental measures.
-To launch educational movements emphasizing on the social awareness of Filipinos working outside the country and their families, who risk parting from them to earn a decent livelihood.

Migrante’s Party Convention, which happens every three years, is the highest strategy making body of this partylist group. In the convention, there would be an election of an executive board, which will be the acting highest policy making officers and the main executive body of the partylist between conventions.

The executive board is comprised of these officers selected by the representatives of the said convention:

-Chairperson
-Vice-chairperson
-Secretary-general
-Deputy Secretary-general
-Treasurer
-Auditor

After the appointment of officers, chapters; the basic unit of the party; are then established in various locations. These will then be formed in territorial units that have a large population of overseas workers and their families.

Kabataan Partylist

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Kabataan Partylist is the only youth partylist group in the Philippine Congress. The pioneering party is composed of energized and pro-active youth who are leaders in a variety of organizations, formations and circles of friends. The members come from different regions representing varied backgrounds, interests and social status, tied by a common vision of a better future for the youth and for the country.

In collaboration with some of its founding organizations – Anakbayan, College Editors Guild, the League of Filipino Students, National Union of Students, Student Christian Movement of the Philippines, and Kabataang Artisa para sa Tunay na Kalayaan – Kabataan Partylist dynamically campaigns for youth and students’ welfare and demands that focus on employment and education.

Kabataan Partylist stays at the vanguard of youth and students’ campaigns against endless tuition and miscellaneous fee increases; for higher state funding for education; sufficient jobs for new graduates; the defense and acknowledgment of human rights and civil liberties, which includes consumer rights and the right to health; and the protection and conservation of national heritage. Kabataan values authentic youth empowerment along with holistic growth.

This partylist for the youth believes that the younger generation should dedicate its energy, intellect and courage as a foundation for a new society that is free from discrimination, social injustice and dishonesty or corruption. It backs youth and student-led organizations functioning for economic, cultural, social, environmental and political justice in the country. It likewise directs the youth from all walks of life to cultivate active involvement in social transformation, good governance and nation building.

In sum, Kabataan carries the platform of “E 4 ALL:”

•END CORRUPTION AND TYRANNY
Kabataan calls for continuity to fight for good governance, which can be easily translated into honest and efficient public service from government officials. The party does not approve of any form of deceit, fraud and plunder in the government.

•EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT
Kabataan calls for the continuous assertion of the right of the youth and the people to education, jobs, and other basic social services like housing, medicine, land, water, and livelihood. Kabataan will further advance the call for lower tuition fees, a higher education budget, wage increase, housing, land, and even livelihood for the people.

•ENVIRONMENT AND NATIONAL PATRIMONY
Kabataan calls for the continuation to protect the environment so that the succeeding generations can benefit from its riches and blessings. The party does not allow the destruction and abuse of our natural resources. Kabataan fights for the protection of our national patrimony against commercial mining, logging, and fishing. Solving the problem of climate change is also one of the many things that the party continuously focuses on.

•EMPOWERMENT AND EQUALITY
Kabataan calls for the continuation of the advocacy for youth empowerment. This is where the people act as a key factor in social change. The partylist will wrestle with the system of politics based on oligarchic rule and takes for granted the welfare of the people, which has been dominant for so long.

For the year 2010, the Kabataan partylist will fight for further representation of the majority in a variety of levels of the government.

A TEACHER – The Education-Oriented Party

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Education plays a vital role in our lives, as suggested by the old adage, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” While the needy, underprivileged cross-section of the population can live for as long as supplies provided for them will last, providing them the appropriate and relevant resources for a good education will allow them to eventually make a living and earn for themselves as well as for their families.

However, educational programs may not be properly carried out if our teachers do not have ample facilities that will back up their teaching competencies. Such is the belief of the political partylist group Advocacy for Teacher Empowerment through Action, Cooperation and Harmony towards Educational Reform, or A TEACHER for short.

Background Information

A TEACHER is a non-profit national and professional organization that promotes the welfare and development of both teachers and non-teaching school personnel.

Our teachers are the ones that hone the minds of the youth. Thus, they play a vital role in shaping the nation. However, with the status of the Philippine educational system, many of our teachers are not compensated properly and some academic institutions lack resources needed in carrying out educational programs for students. A TEACHER aims to change all this. As suggested by one of their legislative agenda, A TEACHER promotes the reviewing of existing educational laws, while also providing support for bills that will give incentives and benefits to teaching and non-teaching personnel. This legislative item also includes giving financial assistance to poor but deserving students, as well as providing government assistance to private schools.

Contributions While Seated in Congress

In the May 2007 elections, A TEACHER was very fortunate to have been chosen from among several other partylist candidates. During its term, the organization never failed to promote its mission and vision. They have been given the chance to bring into reality the things they have been fighting for. Among republic acts they co-sponsored were:

-An Act that institutionalizes pre-school education in the basic educational system;
-An Act that improves the access of education through open learning and distance education in post-secondary and tertiary levels in the country;
-An Act that strengthens and enhances the use of the English language as the medium of instruction in the Philippine academia;
-An Act that guarantees the basic rights of day care workers;
-An Act that defines the crime of child pornography as well as the penalties of this wrongdoing.

Centered on Education

A TEACHER has been instrumental in pursuing the rights and privileges of teachers, non-teaching school staff, and students. While other political bodies in the Philippine government today lean more on leftist principles, A TEACHER has been advocating one of the most important factors to the country’s growth and development: education. And this is perhaps what sets the group apart from other parties. Through A TEACHER, the needs and concerns of our teachers are heard via organized, peaceful means.
