Around Cagayan de Oro City

O’Know CDO!

CDO is Okay for its popular whitewater rafting, notable museums, historical parks and admired educational institutions, and much more! Know the things that are uniquely CDO. Here we gathered some:

For glimpses of ‘CDO from the past’ visit the San Agustin Metropolitan Cathedral for its century old stained glass. Across the bridge, there are caches of Philippine household heirlooms and antiques in La Castilla Museum – a Rodolfo and Elsa Pelaez family memorabilia administered by the Liceo de Cagayan University.

Where the rivers are, old civilization is never far. Two skeletal fragments of a child and a woman who inhabited Cagayan on 377 A.D. were found in Huluga Caves. Artifacts dug from the said caves as well as a collection of Bukidnon and Maranao cultures that have survived the ravages of time are stored in Museo de Oro, located within the campus of Xavier University.

The next time you walk in any of the several modest parks in the city, stop and know a piece of interesting history - makes for worthwhile promenading. The modern-day Divisoria, a park dedicated to local and national heroes, still have quaint traces of the 1900’s Plaza Divisoria when it was built as a town divider (divisoria) or fire breaker after a great fire that almost burned down the entire town.

Located within Plaza Divisoria, the monument at Bonifacio Park is the burial site of most of local soldiers who died during the Philippine-American War of 1900.

Many attest to this: a more pleasant ‘walk – and run - in the park’ would be under the age-old mahogany trees of Vicente de Lara Park, situated in front of the Provincial Capitol of Misamis Oriental.

Just what are the schools to beat? Lourdes College, founded in 1928 is CDO’s oldest educational institution, and second oldest college in the whole Mindanao (after University of the Immaculate Conception of Davao). In 1933, Xavier University was founded establishing itself as the first Jesuit University in the Philippines.
