CDO as the Center of Mindanao Basketball Region A
The city of Golden Friendship, Cagayan de Oro, was officially named as the center of the SBP, or the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ Mindanao Basketball Region A. The decision was finalized during a regional consultancy meeting held in one of the city’s finest hotels, the Pryce Plaza Hotel, last March 11, 2010.
Recently, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas adopted several major changes in its regional set-up in an effort to make the organization more effective in its various sports development programs all over the Philippines.
As part of the plan, the provinces and cities all over Mindanao were divided into three separate cluster groups. The formation of the groups was based on the proximity of their respective areas from the three major cities in Mindanao: Zamboanga City, Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City. This newly formed set-up will allow the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to hold regional eliminations in the three major cities. Each respective champion hailing from Davao City, Zamboanga City and Cagayan de Oro City will be sent to participate in the national finals.
The newly dubbed center of the Mindanao Basketball Region A, which is Cagayan de Oro City, will include Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Lanao, Iligan, Surigao del Norte and finally, Agusan del Sur. According to the agreement, this specific group of Mindanao ballers will be under the leadership of Jigs Jaraula, who currently serves as the MB Regional Director for Cagayan de Oro City.
On the other hand, the Davao group will be handled by the MB Regional Director for Davao City, Regino “Boy” Cua. His group will include players hailing from Davao, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, the province of Cotabato, South Cotabato, General Santos City, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani Province, Agusan del Sur, Maguindanao, and Surigao del Sur.
Finally, the Zamboanga group will consist of players from the city itself, as well as players from Pagadian City, Basilan, Sibugay, Sulu, Jolo, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. The team will be under the care of Area 5 Director Pedro Alfaro of Zamboanga. He will serve as the MB Regional Director C.
This newly formulated set-up was formally proposed for approval in Manila last March 16, 2010 (Tuesday). The proposal was presented during another Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas board meeting.
As of now, the organization has agreed that each group will have their own regional championships and the respective winners for each will be sent to play ball in the national finals.
In addition to everything that was agreed upon during the series of SBP meetings, the organization has also made it a point to appoint a new set of area or provincial coordinators. This will be made in compliance with the recommendation from the regional directors.
Last March 11’s regional consultancy meeting was presided by the Executive Director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, together with the group’s Deputy Executive Director, Bernie Atienza.
