Poverty in Cagayan de Oro City

Poverty is one of the biggest problems in the Philippines as well as with other Asian countries. Crimes of poverty are those committed by as the only means live and survive. Cagayan de Oro City is known to be one of the safest cities in Mindanao, but, in the past few months after the “Sendong” calamity the police noted a rise in the poverty crime rate as an after effect from the typhoon which left many homeless and jobless. Many more who suffered after the typhoon have not received proper aid from the local government, hence the rising rate in poverty crimes in the city. Squatter areas cleared away by the riverside after the horrific flash flood due to the opening of spillways in upper Cagayan River is another reason that left many homeless.

There was even a time in the city wherein most of the scavengers are of minor age. Most of these kids came from very poor families whose parents do not even have the proper abilities and resources to feed them and yet these families continue to churn out child after child. They’re children suffer from malnutrition and lack of parental guidance. These kids, who should be the future of our country, are so unfortunate that their parents are irresponsible. The families live in squatter areas were most families do not care much for proper parenting. They would always blame the government for their situation but they do not do anything to improve their lives; they remain poor and their children sufferfrom their passiveness and laziness.

Everybody has the right to live in a decent way, get an education, have a stable job, and live a happy life. But, these people wanted to be pampered by the government and to be given what they need. When you try to roam around the heart of the city you will see a lot of beggars and people sleeping along the sidewalk. These are the same said people and they create a bad impression on the city. Perhaps the local government should see this entire scenario and attempt to solve this issue of poverty in Cagayan de Oro City.
